Parents come to the Neuron center with all kinds of everyday difficulties. The child is afraid of haircuts or household appliances, doesn't want to try new foods, has trouble with toileting, refuses to brush their teeth. None of this is just being fussy: these are challenges that can be worked on.
What desensitization is
Desensitization is a behavioral method that gradually and safely helps a child get used to a frightening object or situation, reducing anxiety step by step. In ABA therapy, it is often used for fear of the vacuum cleaner, haircuts, water and similar situations.
The key to the method is going gradually. The child isn't forced to face the fear all at once: anxiety is reduced step by step, gently and safely.
A story: the vacuum, the hair dryer and the iron
One example at the center was called "4 appliances, 4 steps to trust." The child used to cry at the sound of the vacuum, run away from a hair dryer that was switched on, and was even afraid of an iron that was turned on. They went step by step. And in the end, the child is right there: looking, touching, exploring. No tears, just curiosity.
After the training at the center, the family described the result like this: "Now appliances are my helpers, not a source of anxiety." The specialists especially thanked the mom for her trust and active involvement: when adults and specialists act as one team, the changes last.
A story: a haircut without tears
Another case: haircuts caused the child tears, anxiety and stress. For the parents, it was a real challenge. The specialists discussed the request, broke down the steps and provided training. The mom took these steps into everyday life, and now the child calmly lets someone cut their hair.
The center emphasizes: this is what ABA therapy is. When methods and recommendations start working at home, a process that used to cause stress becomes calm and safe for both the child and the parents.
If the child isn't ready in the therapy room
Sometimes a child isn't ready for a procedure in the therapy room. That's how it was with speech therapy massage: the child resisted, cried and looked to the parents for support. So a different path was chosen: gentle adaptation at home, where the child feels calm and safe.
The whole process is supervised by the center: parents receive techniques they can use at home and record video reports, and the specialists review them and adjust how things are done. The child is not held down or taught to "put up with it" through tears and fear. Adaptation may take longer, but the goal is to keep the child's trust, so they calmly accept help and enjoy coming to sessions.
Not only for children
Behavioral methods for working with fears are used not only with children. They are also used with adults, for example with phobias. If a fear gets in the way of life, it can be worked on.
